U.S. Bloomberg, citing statistics from data analytics firm Dataforce, reported that the share of Chinese-made cars in the European new car market reached nearly 12% in August this year, setting a new record high. Furthermore, in Germany, the largest European market for Chinese-made cars, the share reached 6.4% in August, and European consumers' evaluation of Chinese-made cars is rising.
According to data, new car registrations in the European Union (EU) in August increased by 5.3% compared to the same month last year. By type, the growth rates were 52.2% for pure electric vehicles, 13.5% for plug-in hybrid vehicles, and 3.4% for conventional hybrid vehicles, which were found to account for over 70% of all new car registrations.
Industry insiders commented, "Due to rising crude oil prices, Europe's stated goal of banning gasoline car sales by 2035, and national government subsidies for car purchases, an increasing number of people in Europe are choosing electric vehicles. More importantly, Chinese cars are grasping the crucial demands in the changing European automobile market, namely price, technology, and experience."
Chinese automobile manufacturers are rapidly advancing development cycles in areas such as batteries, electric drive, smart cockpits, and driving assistance, entering the European market with more competitive costs backed by a complete industrial chain and economies of scale.
Just as evident as sales figures is consumer evaluation. According to a survey by U.S. independent investment research firm Bernstein Research, Chinese manufacturers are 5 years ahead of their Western counterparts in terms of electric vehicle technology. Furthermore, a survey by management consulting firm McKinsey & Company found that 54% of European respondents believe Chinese-made cars lead in pure electric vehicle technology. It is analyzed that technological advantages such as cost performance, innovation capability, and advanced driving assistance systems are important reasons why European consumers are paying attention to Chinese brands.
