A post on China's SNS Xiaohongshu (RED) titled "How do Japanese people date and marry?" drew a big response.
The poster wrote, "I'm curious, how do Japanese people, who have an extremely strong sense of boundaries (a large distance between people), date and marry?" In China, it is generally recognized that "Japanese people maintain a large distance between each other," and not a few Chinese people feel uncomfortable with the fact that they rarely talk about private matters.
In response to the above post, Chinese netizens commented, "Japanese people's boundaries are all set towards people they dislike," and this comment gathered the most likes (heart marks).
Additionally, there were many opinions suggesting that they draw lines in their relationships to some extent on their own, such as, "They create boundaries because they dislike. If they like, of course they get closer. It's the same all over the world," "They classify people to some extent even before dating. If they want to marry, they date with marriage in mind," and "(Japanese people) are good at sorting garbage. They also 'sort' their partners in relationships."
Furthermore, comments were also received such as, "Japanese people just have a strong sense of boundaries; it doesn't mean they lack humanity or emotions," "No matter how strong their sense of boundaries, they are still human. As long as they are human, they eat, sleep, and fall in love," "Actually, Japanese people are good at romance. They become quite skilled at creating a sweet atmosphere and romantic scenarios by the time they are in junior high school," and "(Japanese people) lose their sense of boundaries when they truly fall in love. Of course, sometimes they get angry over trivial things, but that's what dating and marriage are like. They cross each other's boundaries and gradually adjust."
Among them was a comment stating, "While they have strong boundaries in daily life, they are open about sex and easily 'get into bed'." However, in response to this, a reply was posted saying, "I realized after coming to Japan, but honestly, when it comes to sex, (China) domestically is more open (chuckles)," which gathered many likes.
