China's Chen Yuanjiang (Chen Yuanjiang), 20, who won the gold medal in the men's 110m hurdles at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, revealed, "I greeted the Japanese athletes, but there was no reaction, and it made me angry." Chinese media outlets such as Toutiao News reported this.
In the final of the same event held on the 27th, Japan's Muratake Rashid (24), who was a strong contender for the gold medal, slowed down after knocking over almost all the hurdles, securing a silver medal with a time of 13.29 seconds. Chen won the gold medal with a time of 13.15 seconds. At the moment he crossed the finish line, Chen turned his face towards the stands and let out a loud roar, continuing to express his emotions afterwards.
In an interview with Chinese media after the race, Chen revealed, "After finishing yesterday's (26th) preliminary round and returning to the (accommodations) and watching TV, I clearly remember that Muratake Rashid's face was displayed in the upper right corner and the bottom center of the screen during the program, with a gold medal icon next to it. At that moment, my emotions were a little stirred, and I got angry. I thought, 'Perhaps they don't see me as a significant competitor,' or something like that."
He also said, "In addition to that, when I was warming up today, I gave a casual greeting to two Japanese athletes. Then, I don't know if they didn't see me or if they ignored me (as there was no reaction), but I felt a little surge of anger. That's why this race was filled with emotion."
Comments from Chinese netizens included: "Well done!", "Japanese people have no manners at all," "Japanese people won't bow their heads unless you overpower them," "Please keep that emotion going," "This time, let's ignore them," and "No wonder his anger came across even when watching the broadcast. Thanks to the Japanese athletes' provocation (lol)."
