According to Chinese media Kuaikeji, Milan Nedeljković, CEO of German automotive giant BMW, recently responded to media inquiries and expressed the view that the low prices of Chinese cars in Europe are at a commercially inexplicable level.
Nedeljković pointed out that "some Chinese cars are being sold in Europe at prices that make absolutely no business sense, and such a situation could foster protectionist tendencies in Europe."
On the other hand, he emphasized that "additional tariffs constitute a more extensive market intervention." He expressed a desire to reach a voluntary agreement under fair conditions rather than resorting to tariffs, adding that "no one wants the situation to worsen."
The European Commission, the executive body of the European Union (EU), is urgently responding to the expanding trade deficit with China, deeming it "unsustainable." Some European automobile manufacturers' executives and politicians have called for the introduction of local content requirements and the expansion of tariffs to include Chinese-made plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) to protect market share within the bloc.
