A post on China's SNS, Xiaohongshu (RED), stating, "I noticed that few people wear shorts in the streets of Japan," garnered a response.

The poster wrote, "I can understand why salarymen wear suits as if stamped with a seal, but why don't even students wear shorts? In the streets (of Japan), only Westerners or tourists wear shorts."

Over 1200 comments were posted on this post, such as, "If you wear (shorts) in Japan, countless malicious stares will be directed at you," "I've always wondered who buys the shorts sold at Uniqlo (since few people wear shorts in Japan)," "It's related to Japanese culture. If you live in Japan for a long time, you'll understand, though I can't put it into words," "For many years in Japan, I've only worn long trousers or skirts. Sometimes when I return to (China) and wear shorts, it feels incredibly good," and "When you live in Japan, you assimilate. A friend who lived in Japan for 6-7 years was completely influenced and doesn't try to wear shorts even after returning home."

Also, as for specific reasons, opinions such as "Indoors, the air conditioning is effective, train seats are dirty, and many Japanese people have bow legs (O-legs) so they are embarrassed to show their legs," "Many Japanese men are hairy, so they don't wear them. Many Japanese women have bow legs, so they don't wear them," "If you wear shorts, you'll be told it's 'Sunehara (shin hair harassment)'," "Is it for sun protection?", and "It's just a social custom. Wearing sun-protection masks and clothes in China is the same as not wearing short-length trousers in Japan, which is surprising for foreigners," were expressed.

On the other hand, voices were also raised such as, "It depends on the time and situation, right?" "I think there are misunderstandings. Japanese people wear long trousers when going to work, but they often wear shorts when going on trips or vacations," and "They do wear them, but adults just don't wear them much. All children wear them, but perhaps only up to junior high school age. Many adults who wear them are tourists. But no one really cares."

In addition, since young women wearing hot pants in mid-winter or high school girls wearing their uniform skirts shortened are often introduced as "strange phenomena" in China, voices pointing out things like, "When it gets cold, people actually start wearing (shorts)," "In Japan, conversely, shorts and mini-skirts increase in winter," and "Don't Japanese women all wear minis in winter?" were heard, as well as comments evaluating Japan as "Japan is oppressive.
