Singapore media Lianhe Zaobao reported on the 21st that Singapore ranked 11th in the latest edition of the "Best Cities for Study Abroad" ranking.
The ranking is announced by the UK university evaluation body Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and evaluates categories such as "university strength," "student evaluation," "student diversity," "employer reputation," "city attractiveness," and "affordability."
In the latest 2027 edition, Seoul (South Korea) took 1st place, following last year. Tokyo was 2nd, London (UK) was 3rd, Melbourne (Australia) was 4th, and Munich (Germany) was 5th. Ranks 6th to 10th were Sydney (Australia), Paris (France), Berlin (Germany), Vienna (Austria), and Zurich (Switzerland), with Singapore at 11th place.
Among East Asian cities, Beijing ranked 12th, Taipei 14th, Kyoto 16th, Hong Kong 17th, Shanghai 21st, Hangzhou 57th, Nanjing 59th, and Osaka 60th.
Regarding Tokyo, QS stated, "For those who wish to study amidst the vibrancy of a megacity, few cities can match Tokyo's scale and bustle. Tokyo boasts an overwhelming scale, and despite having 18 universities in world rankings, the proportion of students in the urban population remains low. Therefore, it can be said to be a suitable city for those who wish to immerse themselves deeply in the local culture rather than living solely within a student community."
Furthermore, advantages of studying in Tokyo include "delicious food," "high standard of living," "relatively affordable costs," and "lifestyle and culture." QS added, "The city of Tokyo is not only clean but also has excellent public safety, providing an environment where both local residents and international students can live and study with peace of mind. World-class public transportation is well-developed, allowing comfortable and convenient travel to various parts of the city." They also mentioned, "The politeness and innovativeness (of its people) are characteristics that symbolize Japanese culture. While living in a city that boasts some of the world's leading advanced technology, one can also experience the kindness of the local people." (Translated/Edited by Kitada)
