According to Chinese media 3DMGAME, it was revealed in a survey conducted by Logitech G and Censuswide that Gen Z, born between 1997 and 2012, desires formal educational programs leading to an esports career.
The survey was conducted on a total of 18,000 people across many countries. Looking at the percentage of respondents who desired formal educational programs leading to an esports career by country, China was the highest at 93%, followed by Switzerland and Brazil at 83%, Australia at 72%, Poland at 67%, and Spain at 66%.
It also became clear that the percentage of respondents who desired such programs decreased with older generations. Taking Australia as an example, while Gen Z reached 72%, Millennials born between 1981 and 1996 were at 52%, Gen X born between 1965 and 1980 were at 39%, and Baby Boomers born between 1946 and 1964 were limited to 25%.
Furthermore, when asked whether esports should be taught in classes like traditional sports, although the overall percentage of respondents who answered "yes" decreased, it reached 57% among Australian Gen Z.
Dan Hall, Senior Category Manager for Logitech G ANZ, pointed out, "Esports is a major cultural phenomenon that fills stadiums and creates new careers in various fields. Our research shows that esports is gaining global recognition as a legitimate and respected profession, but there is a generational gap in the Australian education sector." He commented, "As these survey results show, Gen Z strongly desires expanded educational opportunities leading to esports and pro-gaming careers, while older generations do not necessarily share the same view. However, because this field offers a clear path to success both personally and professionally, more pathways will be needed to ensure that Australia's education system is fit for the future."
