A Chinese woman reportedly caused a disturbance on a flight from Shanghai, China, to San Francisco, USA, leading to an emergency landing at Narita Airport. Multiple media outlets in China and Hong Kong reported this on the 25th.

According to Chinese media outlets such as Jiefang Daily, the incident occurred on the 24th. A Chinese national female passenger caused trouble with cabin crew on United Airlines flight UA858 from Shanghai to San Francisco, and the aircraft made an emergency landing at Narita Airport.

According to data from the flight tracking website FlightAware, the flight departed Shanghai Pudong Airport at 12:43 PM and landed at Narita Airport at 4:37 PM (Japan time). Afterwards, it re-departed at 6:15 PM and arrived in San Francisco at 10:40 AM (US local time).

Videos taken at the scene circulated on social media, showing multiple police officers in uniforms marked "Chiba Prefectural Police" responding inside the aircraft. The woman involved was heard shouting in Chinese to the police officers, "What are you doing!? I'm not getting off! What are you doing!? What are you doing!?"

In addition, cabin crew could be heard making in-flight announcements such as, "Everyone, please return to your seats and fasten your seatbelts. We are currently responding to an emergency situation on board," and "We cannot take off without your cooperation. Please, return to your seats."

A passenger who was on the same flight and seated near the woman explained on China's social media platform Xiaohongshu (RED) that "the woman had been muttering to herself in Chinese and English and verbally abusing others even before boarding. Western passengers nearby were also frowning. United Airlines is not at fault in this matter at all." The passenger added, "The woman threw meal utensils at the cabin crew, hurled abuses, and threw food on the floor. Security personnel warned her twice, but it had no effect, and the captain decided to make an emergency landing in Japan."

Regarding the Japanese police officers who responded, the passenger recounted that "they consistently avoided using force (forcibly removing her) and patiently communicated with the woman." The passenger added, "The woman refused to cooperate until the very end, repeatedly asking, 'What are you doing!?'
