At a press conference held just before the opening of the 28th Shanghai International Film Festival, Hong Kong actor Tony Leung (梁朝偉) shared his thoughts on the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) in the film industry.

Tony Leung, who serves as the jury president of the competition section, mentioned the use of AI during the press conference and clearly stated that he would not allow his likeness to be provided to AI.

Tony Leung acknowledged that AI significantly contributes to the efficiency of the planning stage and post-production work even in the film industry. However, he also pointed out that it is a double-edged sword, as it greatly reduces time and costs but simultaneously affects employment opportunities for industry professionals. Furthermore, he stated his belief that while AI can perform analysis and imitation based on existing data, it lacks creativity and emotion, and therefore "cannot replace the human role in artistic creation."

According to Tony Leung, actors understand roles through their own life experiences and emotions, and can then express realistic and subtle performances. However, what AI produces is merely "reactions" based on data analysis, and it cannot experience true emotions. He further emphasized that the essence of acting lies in the complex emotional fluctuations and human-like conflicts within characters, and that "such expressions of human nature are difficult for AI to reproduce."

While showing a cautious stance on AI replacing actors, he also revealed that he utilizes AI as an auxiliary tool for work. He stated that he uses it when researching materials or learning new knowledge, and evaluated that if utilized properly, it can be a beneficial tool. However, he emphasized that the most important core part in film production should ultimately be handled by humans, and that point cannot be replaced by AI. (Mathilda)
