In its 'Global Economic Prospects' report, released on June 11, the World Bank lowered its forecast for global economic growth in 2026 from 2.6% in January to 2.5%, and warned of potential downside risks.

The report stated: 'The global economy is facing significant shocks. Due to attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel, energy prices have risen sharply, creating new inflationary pressures, and expectations for tighter monetary policies are growing. The growth outlook for economies dependent on energy imports and for economies (countries and regions) directly affected by conflicts has worsened. This year's global economic growth rate is expected to fall below 2.9% (the figure for 2025) and is projected to decelerate to its lowest level since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.'

The report warned that if disruptions to energy supply are more severe than anticipated and critical situations arise in financial markets, this year's global economic growth rate could fall to 1.3%. It also pointed out that continued uncertainty in trade policies and geopolitical pressures are also substantial risks. However, it also noted that widespread investment in artificial intelligence (AI) and its application fields could boost the level of economic activity.

The report emphasized that implementing relevant policies and measures is extremely important for addressing current challenges, and that international cooperation needs to be strengthened to ensure energy and food supply security, support the trade system, and promote energy transition. Furthermore, it stated that policymakers need to strike a balance between curbing inflation and supporting economic activity, strengthening fiscal sustainability, and maintaining financial stability.
