An alien species, the "Giant Dandelion," has appeared in parks across Beijing.
Recently, colonies of fluffy, transparent, and jellyfish-like "Giant Dandelions" have been confirmed in several parks in Beijing, including Xiaoyang Park and Dongjiao Forest Park in Tongzhou District, and Zhongguancun Park in Haidian District. Many citizens are stopping to take photos of their unique appearance.
While the "Giant Dandelions" certainly resemble ordinary dandelions in appearance, they are considerably larger, with a single cluster of fluff being about the size of an adult woman's fist. Many people naturally assume that these are simply large, mutated dandelions, and are tempted to pick and blow the seed heads indiscriminately. However, plant experts are warning that "these are actually invasive alien species, and you should not blow away their seeds or pick and eat them freely."
Dr. Shi Jun, a botanist, explained that "This plant, known as フトエバラモンギク (Tragopogon dubius), is native to Central and Southern Europe, Central Asia, and West Asia, but is now widely distributed in many regions worldwide, including China, East Asia, and North America. Especially in North America, it has long been introduced as an ornamental plant and has now become a naturalized species there. However, this plant exhibits a biological invasion tendency in many regions, and there is a risk that it could pose a certain ecological threat to native plants." (Source/CGTN Japanese)
