According to Chinese media IT Home, Li Ke (Stella Li), Executive Vice President of Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD, recently appeared on an interview program and clearly stated, "We are developing humanoid robots."
Li said, "The robot competition will be determined by who possesses the strongest manufacturing capabilities, software, and hardware. Automotive-related artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities have commonalities with robots. If robots become widespread in general households in the future, it will be possible to sell robots through BYD's car dealership network." She also mentioned the construction of an open platform that would not only include robots manufactured by BYD itself but also robots developed in cooperation with other companies.
Li had previously stated regarding the current robot market, "While Chinese robots lack advanced brains, US robots have highly developed brains but insufficient limb development. Therefore, the future goal is to develop truly practical robots with both advanced brains and limbs."
Jensen Huang, CEO of US semiconductor giant NVIDIA, highly praised the potential of China's robot industry last July, stating, "Even if Xiaomi and BYD release excellent robot products in the future, no one, including myself, would be surprised. This field is developing vigorously."
