Infrared cameras captured pandas silently 'snacking' at various times during the night.
Recently, staff members of the Taibai Forestry Bureau in Shaanxi Province, western China, while organizing data from infrared cameras, noticed that cameras installed in the Huangbaiyuan National Nature Reserve in the province had captured numerous instances of wild giant pandas in action. Many of these were filmed at night, showing pandas silently 'snacking' at various times during the night. The filming period was from December 2025 to May 2026. The locations were various panda activity areas within the reserve, where Qinling arrow bamboo and Bashan timber bamboo are abundant, making them natural foraging grounds for pandas. According to the footage, pandas, regardless of time or season – be it 8 or 9 PM, 4 or 5 AM, deep winter or spring/summer – were leisurely searching for food or slowly walking through bamboo groves, their black and white patterns standing out prominently in the monochrome footage. Wild pandas spend 12 to 14 hours a day eating, take a break of about 2 to 4 hours between meals, and repeat a rhythm of eating, resting, and eating again. Since bamboo has low nutritional value and digestibility, pandas must meet their energy requirements through large quantities of food and frequent digestion. These activity videos also serve as proof of the excellent condition and integrity of the ecological environment within the reserve. (Provided by/CGTN Japanese)
