Criticism flooded in against Taiwanese travelers who caused a commotion at a Japanese airport, leading to an uproar online. Multiple Taiwanese media outlets, including Liberty Times and China Times, reported on May 31.
An article in the Liberty Times pointed out that "there is no end to people who lack manners and behave inappropriately both domestically and abroad," and then introduced content recently posted on the social media platform Threads.
According to the post, a Taiwanese user who had traveled to Japan explained, "While waiting to board a flight at Chubu Centrair International Airport in Aichi Prefecture, I witnessed a group of young Taiwanese people treating the waiting room like an izakaya (Japanese pub)." The user further noted, "They drank alcohol and made a lot of noise, and after they left, the table was completely messy, and no trash was cleaned up, even though a trash can was right in front of them."
It was also mentioned that "what was even worse was that one of them became heavily intoxicated and was denied boarding by the airline." The post criticized, "As a result, staff had to unload their luggage from the aircraft, causing a delay in takeoff," adding, "Going abroad also means bearing the image of all Taiwanese people. It's fine to have a good time and enjoy your trip. However, that is not a reason to cause trouble for others or create chaos in public spaces."
Furthermore, it stated, "Manners and moderation are not only required domestically, but become even more important when going abroad." Finally, it addressed the young person who was too intoxicated to board, saying, "Your friends were laughing at you as they boarded the plane."
This post was shared by the influencer "Traveler Old K, Japan Lover" (旅人老K 偏愛日本), who disseminates information related to Japan travel, on their own account, where they commented, "Recently, more and more people lack etiquette and manners like this. If they have no manners even domestically, they certainly won't suddenly become polite just by going abroad. Such habits are already ingrained, and the person themselves may not even understand what proper behavior is."
It was also suggested that it is currently difficult for teachers to guide such children, with the background being the existence of so-called "monster parents" who "do not discipline their own children and do not allow others to admonish them."
Other internet users reportedly posted comments such as: "Where many people gather, there will always be fools," "Undisciplined people exist in every era," "They're probably just idiots raised by TikTok," "These kinds of people should be put on an airline's blacklist. Truly shameful," "There are people who adopt the attitude, 'We're paying, so the customer is king.' Such a few people are ruining the overall reputation," "The same thing happened at Haneda Airport before, and I cleaned it up that time," "At a Japanese outlet's food court, a group of Taiwanese people also left paper bags on the table and walked away," and "I want to gradually follow up in various situations from now on to maintain Japan-Taiwan friendship."
