On May 27, 2026, Hong Kong media outlet Hong Kong 01 reported that China lodged a protest demanding a halt to discriminatory law enforcement in response to a series of detentions of Chinese nationals by Philippine authorities.
The Chinese Embassy in the Philippines stated on the 27th, claiming that Chinese nationals are frequently detained by the Philippine military and law enforcement agencies, and lodged solemn protests immediately regarding all such incidents, demanding appropriate handling in accordance with the law.
According to the report, China, based on the "China-Philippines Consular Agreement," demanded that the facts and reasons for detention be reported within 4 days and stated its position that those without legal violations should be promptly released.
Furthermore, while respecting the Philippines' judicial sovereignty and law enforcement, China resolutely opposes "selective and discriminatory law enforcement" targeting Chinese nationals and urged against political manipulation. It also warned that more extensive measures would be taken if the demands are not met.
Ji Lingpeng (GIE LINGPENG), spokesperson for the embassy, expressed serious concerns regarding the safety and protection of legitimate rights of Chinese nationals and reiterated a warning to Chinese nationals residing locally to abide by Philippine laws and ensure they stay with proper visas to avoid illegal overstay.
